Your carpets and rugs are not only a financial investment, but also an investment in the beauty and function of your home and/or business. Carpet and rugs in a home are constantly subject to the major and minor abuses of daily wear and tear. Like other fine furnishings, they require proper care to keep them attractive over the years. In fact, carpet and rugs rarely wear out with respect to fiber wearing away, but their appearance deteriorates and becomes less attractive over time. This is due to abrasive soils becoming embedded which can cause damage to the carpet and rug fibers. Establish a regular maintenance schedule that includes professional rug cleaning and carpet cleaning. The commercial grade equipment used by professional rug cleaners and carpet cleaners gets the deeply embedded dirt out and will make your carpet last longer.

Commandments of Carpet and Rug Care

  1. Vacuum frequently and thoroughly. Most carpet and rug wear is caused by dirt. Oily soils attract more and frequent vacuuming will reduce soil buildup. Vacuum high-traffic areas daily and less-traveled spots at least twice a week.
  2. Institute a no-dirt policy. A no-shoes rule is always effective, but you should definitely make sure there are doormats at each entrance to your home. Clean the mats regularly so they don’t become sources of soil themselves.
  3. If furniture rests on the carpet, use coasters under the legs and move the furniture occasionally. This will help minimize permanent furniture dents from occurring on the carpet.
  4. Get at rug and carpet stains quickly. The longer a stain chemically reacts with the rug or carpet, the harder it will be to remove it. Common rug and carpet stains usually don’t require any liquid cleaners stronger than water. Use as little water as possible and blot them clean instead of rubbing or brushing.
  5. Bring professional carpet cleaners in regularly. It is a good practice to have them cleaned every six months if you have children and every 12 to 18 months if you do not.
